Digital Australia: State of the Nation

November 2014

The influence of the digital economy on the Australian economy, and society more broadly, continues to accelerate. It is a key issue for business and public sector leaders as organisations look to further embrace 'digital' and all it encompasses.

The Digital Australia: State of the Nation report provides a fresh perspective on the digital landscape.

The report shines a spotlight on Australian consumers to capture and understand their digital consumption and behaviours, as well as their attitudes and experiences in the digital age.

The Digital Australia Report is invaluable for anyone looking to better understand the prevailing dynamics in the digital world and how to capitalise on the future.

Complementing the extensive research with consumers are the views of 'digital opinion leaders' who signpost how commercial and government organisations can better meet the needs of today's digitally astute consumers. It involved:

  • An online survey of 1,500 Australians on their digital behaviours, attitudes and product repertoire
  • An online survey of 167 'Digital Opinion Leaders' on their opinions
  • A series of face-to-face depth interviews with 'Digital Opinion Thought Leaders' - highly experienced and knowledgeable business leaders in the Australian digital community

The Big and small of Big Data

The Big and small of Big Data

April 2014

Much has been said and written about Big Data since the term or concept first emerged some 15 years ago and there is a lot of discussion about the future of Big Data – how it will transform science, business and society in general. Some commentators embrace the concept wholeheartedly, others believe it may be a fad and just a buzzword that will come and go like many others. One thing absent from the public debate was an Australian Marketing perspective.

In 2014 EY Sweeney collaborated with Torque Data and the Association for Data Driven Marketing and Advertising (ADMA) to find out how Big Data is really being received by marketers in Australia. The study includes interviews with 75 of the most senior marketers in Australia.

The Big and small of Big Data report outlines the outcomes from this first comprehensive study with the Australian Marketing community and is designed to clarify the various issues, myths and hypotheses about the state of play and the future of Big Data in this country.

Australia's Behaviour Concerns Report

Australia's Behaviour Concerns Report

2013

In partnership with The Shannon Company, we've launched Australia's Behaviour Concerns - the first study of its kind that identifies and provides insights into social behaviours that most concern and/or impact us.

The study involved 2,500 Australians aged over 16 years and will be repeated annually to provide a picture of how our concerns and the behaviours we're impacted by, change overtime.

As well as the insights from Australia's Behaviour Concerns being used to inform our own thinking, the data is also available more broadly on a paid subscription basis through the dedicated website, behaviourconcerns.com.au

Australia's Behaviour Concerns identifies 38 social behaviours of prime concern and impact, which are grouped into 7 core categories - Health, Road Safety, Work Safety, Discrimination, Gambling, Domestic and Community Safety.

Subscribers can access the written summaries and insights, or delve into the detailed data and graphically compare concerns and impacts across a range of variables including states, genders, ages, incomes and job categories.

The Burden of Uncertainty

The Burden of Uncertainty

2009/10

For well over 40 years, we have been talking with Australians to understand their attitudes, outlook and behaviour in order to help corporate Australia make the types of decisions that make a difference.

As the credit crisis swept across the globe in the last half of 2008, many of our clients asked – what does this mean for us? The norms of recent years had dissipated and corporate uncertainty was rapidly converting into pessimism. To provide some perspective and to help signpost the way forward, we conducted a national study involving both qualitative and quantitative research.

The charter we set ourselves at the time was relatively straightforward...what are everyday Australians thinking and what are they likely to do in coming months and beyond? The simplicity of the question belied the complexity of making sense of things in a rapidly changing environment. However experience tells us that one certainty is that the clues to future behaviour lie in identifying the prevailing attitudes of today and interpreting them against a long term understanding of what is happening 'out there'. We've done a number of follow-up studies in subsequent years that have been embraced by our clients.
